“A picture has its life and eternity,” the photographer John Simmons said in a recent interview, “it never stops touching and affecting people.” Despite our current obsession with selfies and hashtags, Simmons’s words ring true. Picture this: a young Black woman standing calmly, two policemen roughly grabbing her by the wrists. Or a little girl passionately pledging allegiance to the American flag, mere days before her internment. Or a pro-women’s rights protester, smiling in defiance as she’s overwhelmed by the opposing side. Photojournalism has stirred the hearts of Americans for a century, sparking insight and change.
