Tobias Kratzer, among the foremost of German theater’s younger iconoclasts, directs the triple bill in which Giacomo Puccini juxtaposes a kitchen-sink murder story, a lachrymose nun’s story, and a comedy inspired by an episode in Dante. “Three different eras, three different settings, three different ‘colors,’” the Monnaie Web site tells us, “though for Puccini, it is through the contrasts between them that the unity of the work is revealed.” Aha! “For his second time directing at La Monnaie,” the text continues, “Tobias Kratzer preserves the original order of the pieces”—he expects credit for this?—“while weaving them together to form a narrative whole, like a circle with no end.” Sounds more like Finnegans Wake than Puccini, but we’re curious.
