The film director Gregg Araki doesn’t shy away from provocative, almost grotesque pleasures. His Teen Apocalypse Trilogy—Totally F***ed Up, The Doom Generation, and Nowhere—captured the listless ennui of 90s youth, and expressed their deepest fears and desires. It crowned Araki as a leading artist of the Queer New Wave. In an era that’s now seeing teens embracing celibacy, his presence has never felt more needed. Araki’s new film reaches out to Gen Z, inviting them to replace their heterosexual malaise with all things erotic. In I Want Your Sex, Olivia Wilde plays Erika Tracey, an unhinged yet aging sex-forward artist that Araki deems “Madonna meets Mapplethorpe.” She begins a kinky affair with her repressed assistant Elliot (Cooper Hoffman.) The relationship is chaotic and shocking, but an experience Araki thinks necessary. “I can’t imagine what my life would be if I didn’t have all of those weird, scary, confusing experiences,” Araki told The New Yorker. “Go out and take a chance.
