“Surrealism comes from the reality of Latin America,” said the writer Gabriel García Marquéz, looking somewhat askance at the movement born in Europe after World War I. Forced to flee an increasingly Fascist Europe, Surrealist artists brought their dreamlike aesthetic to both the Americas. Latin American artists, however, were hesitant to use the term. As Frida Kahlo said, “I paint my reality.” In other words, in Latin America the status quo was already surreal. This exhibition moves from the 1930s, to the literary explosion of Magic Realism, to today. —C.J.F.
