Albrecht Dürer wasn’t particularly free with a compliment, so when he called Hugo van der Goes (1440–82/83) a “great master,” it meant something. Considered the most important Netherlandish artist of the second half of the 15th century, Van der Goes followed the pioneering Jan van Eyck. Like his predecessor, he was both admired and copied for decades after his career. The art of Van der Goes is often shown with works by other masters, but Gemäldegalerie is presenting him in his very first solo show—a long time coming. —Clara Molot
