While quarantining in his studio in Mexico, the self-taught artist Hugo McCloud found inspiration through virtual means. Stuck inside and reading the news, he saw photographs of workers carting heavy goods and migrants crossing choppy waters. These images were springboards for the works in his “Burdened” series, which he says is “about the idea of the person that is burdened in life.” Throughout his career, McCloud has explored labor, social disparities, and racism through non-traditional mediums that are reflective of his themes: roofing metal, tar, and, recently, plastic bags. The Aldrich present the first exhibition devoted solely to McCloud, with approximately 35 pieces on view. —C.J.F.
