The German-Swiss painter Hans Holbein first visited England in 1526. Six years later, in 1532, he moved there, and by 1535 he was King’s Painter to Henry VIII. Holbein painted portraits of Anne Boleyn, Sir Thomas More, and many members of the royal family. After he died, in 1543, his work would inspire the next generation of royal portraitists, who would paint Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I in similarly precise brushstrokes. This exhibition showcases one of the most significant surviving collections of Holbein’s works. Paintings, drawings, miniatures, and book illustrations bring Tudor England to life. —Elena Clavarino
