Herbert Brandl’s landscape painting sees the pictorial dissolving into abstraction. With swathes of vibrant color, the artist paints flora and fauna, his expressive strokes in thrall to the monumental and universal. Since around 2000, Brandl has narrowed his focus to mountains—their intimidating peaks and massive shapes. Work from the last 20 years is on display in this Brandl retrospective, along with some paintings made especially for the show. —E.C.
