Vogue editor Anna Wintour has said that Helmut Newton’s photographs are “synonymous with Vogue at its most glamorous and mythic.” Newton shot campaigns for everyone—from Yves Saint Laurent to Lavazza, Blumarine to Swarovski. Despite the commercial aspect of these photographs, most felt more like editorial shoots than advertisements. Newton, who jokingly called himself “a gun for hire,” could find a visual narrative for a photograph whether the subject was couture, perfume, crystal, or coffee. This exhibition, which celebrates his life and work, takes place at the industrial Muelle de Bateria, a warehouse in the Galician port city. “We immediately agreed that Helmut would have loved the repurposed silos and warehouse,” the curators told Artnet, “the characterful vernacular and architecture of the city.” —Elena Clavarino
