Helen Frankenthaler: Malerische Konstellationen

Helen Frankenthaler, Beginnings, 1994.

May 4 – Oct 30, 2022
Museumsplatz 5, 3500 Krems an der Donau, Austria

“My pictures are full of climates, abstract climates,” said Helen Frankenthaler, “not nature per se, but a feeling.” An important Abstract Expressionist, Frankenthaler’s art was not as thematic or sequential as that of her peers. She rose to prominence during the 1950s, and broke through to her soak-stain technique with the 1952 painting Mountains and Sea. After her first retrospective in 1960, at the Jewish Museum in New York, Frankenthaler began evoking elements of landscape and figuration, hailing the volatility of the physical universe. This exhibition presents 74 works from different phases of her career. The gradual replacement of lines with lush stained color is fascinating. —Elena Clavarino
