Helen Frankenthaler: Late Works, 1990–2003

Feb 11 – May 23, 2021
56 Lexington St, New Britain, CT 06052, United States

“My pictures are full of climates, abstract climates,” said Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011), “not nature per se, but a feeling.” A great American artist, Frankenthaler rose to prominence during the 1950s, when, while painting Mountains and Sea, she stumbled upon her color-stain technique. An important Abstract Expressionist, her work was not as thematic or sequential as that of her peers. She often evoked elements of landscape and figuration. Presenting 22 works on paper, dating from 1990 to 2003, this exhibition explores Frankenthaler’s late work. All pieces are characteristically lyrical, even at over six feet tall. —E.C.
