In 1593, the English Renaissance writer Sir Philip Sidney published his most ambitious work, the lengthy prose poem “The Countess of Pembroke’s Arcadia.” Set in ancient Greece, the epic looks at the efforts of Duke Basilius to evade a prophecy about his family’s downfall; he does this by leaving his duchy. The poem inspired Head Over Heels, a musical comedy written by Jeff Whitty and James Magruder. Debuted on Broadway in 2018, this modern version of the poem is set to music by The Go-Go’s, the 1980s all-female pop band behind hits such as “We Got the Beat” and “Lust to Love.” Tom Jackson Greaves directs and choreographs. —Jensen Davis
