Hanne Darboven: Erdkunde und (Süd-) Koreanischer Kalender

Sept 12, 2019 – May 25, 2020

“Art is a mixture between concept and discipline,” the conceptual artist Hanne Darboven, who died in 2006, once said. Best known for her handwritten numerical works on paper and her interest in the mathematical underpinnings of music, Darboven also delved into the intersection of art and formal education. In this exhibition, 700 paper panels cover the gallery walls in a looming grid, each panel a collage of line drawings combined with excerpts of encyclopedias and non-fiction books. In the gallery’s center, wooden classroom displays are placed as foreground. It’s classroom rigor, but with a touch of the mystical. —E.C.
