Hampi, in Southern India, was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire from its founding in 1336 until 1565. Today, many of the ancient city’s monuments, which once numbered over 1,000, are well-preserved. These include monasteries, temples, and ancient pavilions. Now the collector Sangita Jindal, on 18 nearby acres, has erected a contemporary art center of organically curving forms, clad in terracotta, that blend seamlessly with the landscape. It’s a massive project that allows residencies and workshops as well as large-scale exhibitions to be held on the premises. The first show, drawn from Jindal’s collection, includes rising and established Indian artists such as Zarina Hashmi, Shilpa Gupta, and Dayanita Singh. —Elena Clavarino
