The Italian Baroque master Il Guercino painted many portraits but one in particular stands out: his rendering of Fra Bonaventura Bisi, a Franciscan friar who also worked as an art dealer, a printmaker, and a painter of miniatures. In the painting, Bisi is dressed in a religious habit, a gold hoop glints on his left earlobe, and he holds up a small portrait while pointing to a stack of drawings. This exhibition at the Ringling focuses on Bisi and his intricate network of collectors, artists, and intellectuals, bringing together oil paintings, drawings, prints, and published writings from the period. —Elena Clavarino
