“Worst U.K. Fire Since the Bombing of W.W. II.” Gillian Slovo’s documentary play Grenfell: In the Words of Survivors recounts the true story of a 2017 residential fire in West London that killed 72 people. Slovo argues that discrimination against Grenfell Tower’s primarily low- and middle-income immigrant population played a major role in decisions that placed money over life: the cladding chosen for the tower’s 2014 refurbishment, for instance, had a fire rating of class E and did not meet minimum requirements. Slovo interviewed survivors so that she could tell their stories with precision, and her play includes the narratives of 10 residents. They all faced the same choice: Stay put—as officials told them to do—or trust their instincts and flee. —Jeanne Malle
