Grateful Dead

These days, the Grateful Dead may seem anachronistic, belonging to the Summer of Love, Woodstock, and the dawn of dirty hippies and daily acid trips. And yes, the Dead did have its own acid cook. As Jerry Garcia put it, “We had enough acid to blow the world apart.” But the band was also innovative, developing DIY musical technology. And its tie-dye, free-form ethos actually brought people together. Although the group disbanded in 1995 following the death of the beloved Garcia, it plays on through replacements to a grateful crowd of nostalgic hippies and psychedelic-minded youngsters—the Deadheads. —C.J.F.
