Gorham Silver: Designing Brilliance, 1850-1970

May 3 – Dec 1, 2019
20 N Main St, Providence, RI 02903, USA

Gorham “Fairfax,” my mother’s tea set, was stately with an Art Deco attitude. But it must be admitted that Gorham’s “Circa ’70” coffee and tea service, designed by Donald H. Colflesh in 1958, and produced in 1960, is poetry in the future tense (pictured above). The Gorham company was established in 1831, in Providence, R.I., and it became the largest silver company in the world. Consequently, the RISD Museum’s holdings of Gorham silver are huge. Silver buffs, put down your polish, RISD is where you need to be. —L.J.
