Giuseppe Penone: Bodies Imprinted in the Air

Sept 16 – Nov 13, 2021
22, Anapiron Polemou Street, Athina 115 21, Greece

“When you work with any material, the material is leading,” the Italian artist and sculptor Giuseppe Penone has said. “It is the artist’s mission to coax out the vitality and show it.” A pioneer of the Arte Povera movement, Penone’s practice has long been rooted in the natural world. His first performance-based works were inspired by Garessio, Italy’s sprawling forests. His stripped and skeletal trees—made of copper, stone, and wire—are monumental and menacing. He has explored rocks and bark, skin and hair. This exhibition spans Penone’s work from the 1970s to the present. —E.C.
