David Geffen Hall, the little-loved home of the New York Philharmonic, is under much-needed renovation through Fall 2022, leaving the orchestra to shuttle between a pair of more intimate nearby venues: Alice Tully Hall and the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall. To open the season, Aaron Copland and Beethoven share a program with the London-born Anna Clyne, born in 1980, and George Walker, who died in 2018, the first Black American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Jaap van Zweden, the orchestra’s music director, conducts. For stardust, there’s Daniil Trifonov as soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, the most poetic of the composer’s five, associated with the legend of Orpheus taming the Furies. —M.G.
