The Nigerian icon Fela Kuti, who died in 1997, was harassed, censored, and imprisoned for the political messages in his music, but that never stopped him. Today, Felabration is still one of Nigeria’s biggest music festivals. Both a celebration of music—with dance competitions and performances by top artists—and a platform for political discussion, its goal is as one with Kuti’s: to empower people through music. —J.V.
