“What does it mean to be a gay Indian man?” asks the London-based photographer Sunil Gupta. “This is the question that follows me around everywhere I go and is still ever present in my work.” Gupta was born in New Delhi in 1953. In the 1960s his family moved to Montreal, and in 1976 the young photographer followed a friend to New York City. “Suddenly I found myself in this amazing city,” he says, “which was full of the two things that were of interest. One was that there were gay men everywhere, in a very public way. I’d never seen that. And there was a lot of photography.” Since those early days Gupta’s focus has been political in nature, his photographs making their mark as impulsive, subversive, and personal, inspiring generations of LGBTQ+ rights campaigners. In a retrospective that spans a career of five decades, street photography, narrative portraits, and snaps of constructed scenography are on display. —E.C.
