Back in 1961, the American artist Frank Stella famously said that a picture was “a flat surface with paint on it, nothing more.” Stella had recently moved to New York City, where Abstract Expressionism reigned. But he found the expressive use of paint exhausting, and was drawn to minimalist approaches such as the graphic targets of Jasper Johns, the color-field canvases of Barnett Newman. Sixty years later, Stella is still evolving. In this exhibition, sculptural pieces inspired by Canada’s great lakes and rivers are suspended from rectilinear metal stands that act as airy frames. At the exhibition’s opening, Stella was awarded the Alexej von Jawlensky Prize, which goes to a contemporary artist every five years. —Elena Clavarino
