Frank Bowling: Penumbral Light

Frank Bowling, Watermelon Bight, 2020.

June 10 – Aug 20, 2022
Limmatstrasse 270, 8005 Zürich, Switzerland

Though Frank Bowling is British, he is known as more of a transatlantic man. He was born in British Guyana, then left to study and work in the U.K. As he gained early acclaim, Bowling made his way to New York, where he lived at the Chelsea Hotel alongside Rothko and Warhol, and was captured by the dynamism of Abstract Expressionism and Pop art. Since then, he has spent his life experimenting with paint—layering his canvases with different washes, playing with impasto, gels, and metallic pigments. This exhibition presents recent abstract works from his 2020 lockdown in London. In a suddenly static life, Bowling found new energy. —Elena Clavarino
