Abraham Lincoln said, “Freedom is the last, best hope of earth.” In a world where enclosure has become the new norm, will our definition of freedom change? The Dutch artists collective DRIFT has created a performative art installation that invites us to think about this question. On May 5, a swarm of autonomously flying drones will travel in unison to celebrate healthcare workers. In past performances, the drones traveled in groups, yet made distinctly individual motions. The message? If the drones were to abandon the wave altogether, there would be chaos. A metaphor, then for the importance of collaboration and unity. —E.C.
