Born in 1939, São Paulo’s Foto-Cine Clube Bandeirante (FCCB) was a group of largely dilettante Brazilian photographers, many of whom worked day jobs as engineers and accountants. Reacting to Brazil’s postwar industrialization by producing highly abstract modernist works, the group reached a stylistic apex in the 1950s. Just as today’s social-media influencers define aesthetic currents, these untrained artists were a crucial part of Brazil’s developing modernist aesthetic. This exhibition brings together 60 FCCB works—on show for the first time at a major museum outside of Brazil—that demonstrate the scope and story of this dynamic group. —Sabina Vitale
