Foreland

Foreland / Catskill / Opening July 1

The artist Stef Halmos first landed in Hudson Valley in 2012, after a search for a studio in the city, prohibitively expensive, ended up taking her to the boroughs, and then to the suburbs, and then north. One day, Halmos was eating ice cream on a pier with her wife, McKenzie Raley, when she laid eyes on a boarded-up mill just across the water, in Catskill. She fell in love with the space and dreamt of turning the red-brick behemoth into a cutting-edge arts complex. Now, after 10 years, the 85,000-square-foot space is open and Halmos’s dream is a reality. It’s called Foreland, and it contain 31 private studios, four public galleries, a coop work space, rental spaces, and a restaurant. All in all, an exciting addition to the area’s vibrant arts scene. —Elena Clavarino
