With around 1,000 classic and contemporary films available at any given time, the streaming service Criterion Channel, which pulls from the Criterion Collection’s extensive archive, is a gift to movie lovers everywhere. Viewers can discover, for instance, the ten favorite films of Rachel Kushner (The Flamethrowers), which include, of course, Monte Hellman’s Two-Lane Blacktop, but also Alain Resnais’s Hiroshima mon amour, starring Emmanuelle Riva and Eiji Okada—“the sexiest couple,” says Kushner, “in the history of cinema.” They can rediscover classics such as Paris, Texas, directed by Wim Wenders, a pioneer of New German Cinema, and written by Sam Shepard. And they can arrange movie marathons by director: the complete Wenders one day, Hitchcock another day (or, more likely, several). One of the site’s best features is the way it groups movies in categories. Its Foreign-Language Oscar Winners list, the most attractive of the bunch, features 19 films including The Great Beauty,8 ½, and Black Orpheus. Directors range from Akira Kurosawa to Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman to Luis Buñuel—a wonderful whirlwind in the last seven decades of international cinema. —J.V.
