The Library of Congress is older than one of the world’s earliest films, Sneeze, by 94 years. Founded in 1800, it is the biggest library in the world—“the book palace of the American people,” the library was called in 1897—and it now hosts more than 7,000 films and videos, including 1894’s Sneeze. The archive solves any movie-night indecision, featuring a wide range of material from Oscar Micheaux’s Within Our Gates (1920) to a jam session featuring Duke Ellington and his band. —J.V.
