Michael Mann’s newest film, Ferrari, succeeds in ways that his 2006 blockbuster Miami Vice fell short. Both films take place in picturesque settings and both have thrilling plots that center on virile (and stylish) main characters. But Ferrari—which follows Enzo Ferrari as he builds his racing team and brand in late 50s Italy—has the storyline and pacing to complete the package. Adam Driver is an ideal choice for the role of the hulking Enzo, his automotive last name aside. Family strife leaves Enzo taught and coiled. He and his business operate on the brink of failure. But Driver successfully conveys Enzo’s erudition, confidence, and unmistakable love for cars, which allowed him to create his company in the first place. And beyond the compelling performances of Driver, Penélope Cruz, and Patrick Dempsey, Ferrari is also beautifully shot. Its racetrack scenes will enthrall racing enthusiasts and casual moviegoers alike. —Jack Sullivan
