Since 2015, the world has watched Venezuela devolve into a disastrous humanitarian crisis, its poverty and human-rights abuses spurring 15 percent of the population to flee the country. In an effort to better understand the struggle of Venezuelans, the Ecuadorian artist Felipe Jácome traveled to a Columbian town on the border, where he lived with migrants on the run. Using defunct Venezuelan banknotes and haunting black paint strokes, he depicted those he encountered on his journey. —E.C.
