Feliciano Centurión: Abrigo

Apr 23 – May 16, 2020
680 Park Ave, New York, NY 10065, United States

Paraguayan artist Feliciano Centurión brought together folk art and queer aesthetics by painting and embroidering quotidian objects, such as blankets and aprons, in his signature naive style. Through his poetic stitching and imagery, Centurión reflected back on personal memories—his youth in the tropics, his escapades in the city. He also, as a young man with AIDS in the 1990s, faced approaching death and used his art to say goodbye. This online exhibition, and the accompanying video, is vibrant and heartbreaking, its gentle acceptance captured in Centurión’s unforgettable rendering of a sacrificial lamb. —E.C.
