Valerio Galli conducts and Lileana Blain-Cruz directs Gounod’s Ur-Faust, which connoisseurs have recently come to know through a recording on the esoteric Bru Zane label. The big news: Méphistophélès gets to sing an adaptation of “The Song of the Flea,” a zesty comic moment in the play. Like the other pages restored to the score, it’s far from memorable. When Gounod really wants the devil to get our attention, he doesn’t mess around. The rising tenor Jonathan Johnson stars as the aged scholar turned ardent young lover, opposite Talise Trevigne as the maiden he ruins. The casting of the troublemaker in chief has yet to be announced. —Matthew Gurewitsch
