With nearly 20 plays to her credit, including such beauties as The Clean House and For Peter Pan on Her 70th Birthday, Sarah Ruhl’s place in the canon of contemporary playwrights is unshakeable. Given the subject matter, it seemed a foregone conclusion that her Eurydice (2003), a recasting of the Orpheus myth, would eventually attract a composer. Sure enough, the mercurial, intellectually voracious Matthew Aucoin has risen to the bait. The world premiere took place on February 1 at the LA Opera, with Aucoin on the podium and the scintillating Danielle DeNiese in the title role. The East Coast premiere at the Met is paced by the company’s music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, with a cast led by Erin Morley, another sparkler. The production is by Mary Zimmerman, awarded the Tony for Best Direction of a Play nearly 20 years ago in recognition of Metamorphoses, her feather-light, thoroughly contemporary, yet timelessly poetic adaptations of tales from Ovid. —M.G.
