The poet and artist Edel Adnan was born in Beirut in 1925, in the bleak postwar period. She worked in media as a young woman, but also loved to paint, relishing the “immediate beauty of color.” Known for landscape paintings of unembellished rapture, Adnan used palette knives to execute vibrant shapes that float buoyantly, abstractions of sun, sky, water, mountain, plain. She died in 2021, at age 96. This is the first Adnan exhibition in Düsseldorf since the artist’s death. —Elena Clavarino
