The Brazilian sculptor Erika Verzutti works in bronze, concrete, and papier mâché. Although her forms sensuously suggest fruits, vegetables, eggs, they can seem not of our time. In fact, her playful nods to art history sometimes go back to the palaeolithic. The simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary nature of her creations is a property Verzutti cultivates. “I’m feeling bad and good,” she once explained. “The bad feeling is that I’m so common. And the good feeling is I’m so common; it’s the same thing. It’s okay. I’m alive.” This is Verzutti’s first solo exhibition in the U.K. —E.C.
