Emma Cline, author of The Girls—a 2016 novel about the young women in Charles Manson’s cult—and the short-story collection Daddy (2020), is Metrograph’s latest programmer-in-residence. For the series, co-presented with Gagosian, Cline has chosen nine films, among them Robert Altman’s haunting 1977 masterpiece 3 Women and Luca Guadagnino’s 2015 drama A Bigger Splash. The series could be seen as a collection of Cline’s source material—films that inspire the writer’s baroque, disturbing tableaus of girlhood and growing up. —Sophie Kemp
