In the 2023 film One Life, which is based on true events, we become acquainted with Nicholas Winton at two distinct stages of his life. There is the 29-year old Winton, played by Johnny Flynn (The Dig), who devotes himself to evacuating Jewish children from Czechoslovakia. It’s 1938, another world war is on the horizon, and Winton’s disgust with the persecution faced by the country’s Jews compels him to act. And he has to do it fast, before the Nazis expand their occupation of the Sudetenland to include the whole the country—which happened on March 15, 1939—and fleeing becomes perilous if not impossible. Spliced within this narrative is the 79-year old Winton, played by Anthony Hopkins. He finds documents related to his past heroics, which cause him to reminisce—and, in the movie, comment on—the atrocities he witnessed and fought against. Both Flynn and Hopkins bring Winton to the screen brilliantly, in a film that is at once horrific and inspiring. —Jack Sullivan
