In 1950s New York, the artist Ellsworth Kelly was among those who rejected the aggressive brushwork of Abstract Expressionism and focused on Color Field painting instead. For Kelly, the challenge was to take “the things he saw” and distill them into simple planes and forms. Though he was better known for his painting, Kelly used the same approach with sculpture. His works in bronze, steel, and wood are powerfully distilled. They are also architecturally sensitive and quietly disruptive. Nine of these sculptures—enjoying their first trip to the Netherlands—are on view in the Rijksmuseum gardens. —E.C.
