In the late–19th century, when Impressionists were producing nature scenes throughout Europe, some curious Quebec artists made the journey across the Atlantic to Paris. William Brymner, for example, enrolled at the Académie Julian in 1878, studied under famous exponents of grand manner naturalism, then brought his learning home in 1885. Artists such as Ozias Leduc, James Wilson Morrice, and Robert Pilot, to name a few, would use French methods to paint landscapes from the St. Lawrence River to Quebec City to the Charlevoix region. This exhibition explores the pursuit of the ephemeral in the culture of Quebec. —Elena Clavarino
