Eileen Agar: Angel of Anarchy

May 19 – Aug 29, 2021
77-82 Whitechapel High St, Shadwell, London E1 7QX, United Kingdom

Born in Buenos Aires just before the turn of the 20th century, the artist Eileen Agar injected a wild and deeply personal spirit into the Cubist and Surrealist styles of her time. Agar made her first ocean crossing at the age of six (!) to attend boarding school in England, and consistently incorporated her love of the sea in work that ranged from paintings to collages to photographs. Titled after Agar’s famous sculpture, this exhibition of more than 100 pieces captures the eccentric artist’s evolution from Slade School student to found-object aficionado. —J.V.
