“Whatever I know how to do, I’ve already done,” said the Spanish Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida (1924–2002). “Therefore I must always do what I do not know how to do.” Throughout his life, Chillida journeyed across the Mediterranean, taking in works that continuously informed his own. First he traveled to Greece, examining the nuances of Pre-Classical architecture. Then came adventures in Italy. Finally, Provence. Chillida, who created mysterious yet stoical works in iron, wood, and steel, was fascinated by the intricacies of light and landscape. In a unique cultural exchange, his sculptures and drawings will be on display in Somerset farm buildings and gardens through early 2022. —E.C.
