Early Snow: Michael Snow, 1947–1962

Feb 8 – May 24, 2020
123 King Street West, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, L8P 4S8

Speaking of his renowned series “Walking Women” (1961–67), which saw a single silhouette repeated in myriad treatments, Michael Snow told Bomb in 2014, “The point was partly to see what the difference would be between this same thing imaged in this or that medium.” Still, “Walking Women” wasn’t the first time Snow engaged in experimentation. It was during his early years, from 1947 to 1962, that he began making breakthroughs in painting, sculpture, and figurative studies. In an unprecedented exhibition, 40 of these forgotten exploratory pieces are on view. —E.C.
