Dumb Type is super smart and issue-oriented. This artists’ collective, founded in 1984 and based in Kyoto, is the opposite of smiley-faced entertainment—work that is mute about the darker aspects of contemporary life. “Actions + Reflections,” a multimedia exhibition showcasing the collective’s latest takes on modern Japan, is part of the grand re-opening (after a three-year renovation) of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. —J.V.
