Over the last few months, the American artist Doug Aitken was listening to piano pieces by the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók, his series of 153 works that date from 1926 to 1936. “As I listened,” he says, “I started to imagine the similarity between these piano works and their simple to complex structures and how we’re experiencing life in the information era.” It had to do with the way people process information, images, and then integrate that knowledge into everyday life. Aitken attempted to replicate that complexity in a wall hanging made from fabric fragments. The works that resulted are on view in this exhibition, which is a study of patterns that surface and recede. The show coincides with the European premiere of Aitken’s 2021 film Flags and Debris. —E.C.
