Dolly Parton meets Charles Dickens in this country retelling of A Christmas Carol. Here, Scrooge is transformed from a Victorian moneylender into a Depression-era owner of a Smoky Mountain coal mine. While Parton may seem like an odd Dickens revisionist, she is in fact a well known storyteller. Parton’s gift for the ballad adds sparkle and heart to the Christmas classic’s characters and key themes. And by relocating the story to her hometown, Parton, with charm and rhinestones, shines through Dickens and makes the story purely her own. —C.J.F.
