The German philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach coined the expression “man is what he eats” in his essay “Principles of the Philosophy of the Future,” written in 1843. Still, the saying holds true almost 200 years later—and in any culture. This exhibition at LACMA, the first of its kind, showcases Islamic art in the context of the region’s culinary traditions. Two-hundred-and-fifty works related to food are on view—spoons, flasks, illustrated manuscripts, and also magnificent oil paintings designed to stimulate the senses. Be sure to eat before going. —Elena Clavarino
