The photographer Diane Arbus was always on the prowl, ready to trap the vulnerable, the odd, and the uncanny with the sixth sense of her lens. Born in 1923, she shot characters on the fringes of society—carnival performers, nudists, crossdressers—in an intimate yet spontaneous manner, presenting them with an unnerving air of normality. Arbus committed suicide in 1972, the same year that MoMA presented a major retrospective of her work. Fifty years later, her influence endures. This is Arbus’s first solo show in Greater China. —Elena Clavarino
