Der Freischütz, by Carl Maria von Weber

May 9–19, 2020
Opernring 2, 1010 Wien, Austria

It’s on YouTube, so why not spill the beans? As staged by Christian Räth, in the ghoulish Wolf’s Glen Scene, the grand piano catches fire. What grand piano? If you’ve been paying the least attention to European operatic production over the last several decades, you’d know better than to ask. The cast for this most Romantic of opera scores stars Camilla Nylund as the virginal Agathe, Andreas Schager as the sharpshooter she’s hoping to marry, and Tomasz Konieczny as the blackguard who makes trouble. These are names to conjure with. And there’s not an orchestra on earth better suited to Weber’s woodsy instrumentals than the Vienna Philharmonic, the house’s incomparable pit band. —M.G.
