The Evil One’s hand is all over the tale of Der Freischütz (“The Free Shooter,” read on), and at no point more so than in the accursed Wolf’s Glen, where a desperate young bridegroom goes to cast magic bullets the night before a single shot of his rifle will determine whether or not he gets the bride he longs for. (Paging Dr. Freud!) Weber’s invention in this scene singes the senses, but for Daniel Schlosberg, conductor and orchestrator of the Big Apple’s buzziest chamber ensemble, the 19th-century idiom needs extra punch to make its effect on 21st-century ears. We say without fear of contradiction that it does not, but we’re curious to hear what bells and whistles he comes up with. —M.G.
